| What is Meibukan Goju-ryu Karate-do? |

| Meibukan is a system of Goju-ryu karate-do that is taught and practiced by the Yagi family. "Mei", in Chinese means bright or enlightenment, "bu", means martial arts. Meibukan Goju-ryu karate-do is recognized by most Okinawan and Japanese practitioners as teaching the most advanced kata and techniques of Master Chojun Miyagi's Goju-ryu. Like his teacher, Master Miyagi also went to China to further his martial arts training. After the death of Master Miyagi in 1953, the Miyagi family had a meeting in 1963 to decide which student had best captured the Master's technique, teaching methods and way of life. They selected Meitoku Yagi to inherit Miyagi's system of karate-do, and presented him with the Master's belt and uniform. Master Meitoku Yagi has been retired from active teaching since the late 1980's and passed on the responsibility to his two sons, Meitatsu Yagi and Meitetsu Yagi. The Meibukan humbo (headquarter) dojo (training hall) is located in Naha City, Okinawa, Japan.
Meitatsu Yagi Sensei and his brother Meitetsu Yagi Sensei are also senior advisors of the All Okinawan Karate-do Goju-kai, which Master Meitoku Yagi had founded in the early 1960's. The first person who brought the Meibukan system of Goju-ryu karate-do to North America is Anthony Mirakian Sensei. |
